How to keep your home safe while you are away

Photo of masked intruder during robbery in villa

This is a revision of a post I put up 6 years ago.

I am repeating it as it has some very good advice that could save you a lot of problems and save you money.

The original post was prompted by an article I read published by the Good Housekeeping Institute.

Below is an extract.

It contains some fairly good advice but as I point out it is not really the answer. Don’t worry I do share a better solution (and one that will not cost you anything) so keep reading.

Here is the extract

5 ways to burglar-proof your home
https://goo.gl/oEaowg

Over 70% of thieves search social media to find empty homes.
Beat the burglars by following these top tips to a more secure home:

1. Don’t share the fact your house is empty
It may be tempting to share your ‘hurrah, I’m going on holiday’ feeling with your friends but, according to mediabistro.com, 78% of thieves use social media to find empty houses. It’s best to avoid posting about your break on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And make sure selfie-obsessed teenagers do the same!

2. Make your house look lived in
If you get milk or newspapers delivered, make sure you cancel them during your holiday so there isn’t a build up. If you have a window by your letterbox, it’s a good idea to make sure it’s covered so any prying eyes can’t see the build-up of letters by your front door. Things like this make it obvious to criminals that no one is home. If you have timers for your lights, use these to make it look as if someone is coming and going.

3. Recruit a neighbour or family member
If you have family or neighbours who can come over every day, they can make it look as if someone is in. If they can move your post, or park a car in the driveway, it will help put off a burglar who may be monitoring your home.

4. Lock all your windows and doors
A quarter of break-ins are through windows, so make sure they’re firmly locked, even those on upper floors. If no one is around, consider installing movement-activated floodlights or sensor lights at the front or back of your home.

5. Keep valuables in a safe place
Over half of people don’t leave their valuables in a secure place, according to a study by confused.com. In fact, 13% leave items in a sock drawer – a popular target for burglars. It’s worth investing in a safe or finding a clever spot to stash precious jewellery and gadgets. For insurance purposes, doors should have a five-lever mortise deadlock to comply with BS3621 and window locks BS7950.

All excellent advice…. BUT sadly it is not that easy.

I wish it was that easy

Burglars also read those tips. They know the tricks we are advised to use and so are often not fooled.

The fact is that your house is still being left empty and while these ‘tricks & tips’ may help to hide that they are no substitute for having the house actually occupied with someone living there.

This is where we can help. And it is FREE.

We can help you find a suitable person or family to live in your home while you are away. they will even look after your pets. No pretending the house is occupied. It will be occupied by someone trustworthy with good references and it will not cost you anything.

The other side of the coin is that if you would like a rent-free vacation we have houses owners all over the world who let us know when they are going to be away and we can put you in contact with them.

Research that could save your health, your job and your family.

Off on holiday

A few days ago I was reading news about research into the habits of  UK workers and their annual holidays. (For readers in the USA read holiday as vacation).

I saw 2 different news reports that looked at the same problem from slightly different points of view. below are extracts from them and links to the original articles.

The first article showed that not taking leave is causing serious problems.

British workers left ‘stressed, rundown and depressed’
because they are not taking enough holiday time.

Overworked Brits are being left stressed, depressed and rundown
because they are not getting enough holiday time.

That’s based on research which claims a third of employees are left failing to take their annual holiday allowance ………….  Mark Cropley, Professor of Health Psychology at the University of Surrey, added: “The research found that more than two thirds (68%) don’t get away for short breaks, however, mini breaks can be a great way to recharge the batteries, whether abroad or in the UK.
“Not only do they force us to distance ourselves physically from work, they can also give our brains a mental holiday and allow us to spend quality time with family and friends without the distraction of work.   http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/british-workers-left-stressed-rundown-7238571

The next article (dated 1st Nov 2017) tries to explain why leave time is not being taken.

Why UK Workers Are Not Taking All Their Annual Leave

The average worker in Britain still has six days to use up before the end of the year, which, if left unused, would mean a staggering 134 million wasted days as a nation. A third of employees have as many as 10 days still to use up, found the survey of 1000 workers by Jurys Inn.

The most common reason for having annual leave left? That’s also pretty surprising, given that being “like, ugh, so busy right now” has become a status symbol in our culture. The top explanation was not knowing what to do with the remaining days, the Mirror reported.

Other more optimistic employees (11%) purposely save up their holiday days until the end of the year with the aim of booking an exciting trip – only to find that by November there are no holidays available that tickle their fancy. A further 11% said they simply didn’t have enough money to spend on holidays.
If you’re among those with holiday still to use, with just two months of the year left, you may want to think about taking action or risk losing them altogether.   http://www.refinery29.uk/2017/11/179232/wasted-holiday-days-annual-leave-uk

Helpful tip that could stop you making a costly mistake.

Over the last few months I have noticed a lot of news reports about companies who offer package holidays (vacations for our US readers) going under.

Some leave their customers stranded.Burning Money

Today the UK news is covering a company called LowCostHolidays who have now closed and according to a report on the BBC it has left 27,000 people already abroad and 110,000 with bookings for the future that they have already paid for. Money now lost for the majority.

The report goes on to say that the majority will only get £7.78 back as compensation.

A spokesperson for the administrators, Smith and Williamson, said: “It is only once claims are finalised that a specific figure for compensation will become evident. However, it does seem that the amount of compensation for holidaymakers will, very unfortunately, prove to be negligible – around 1 or 2%.”

Those already abroad will have to pay for the rest of their hotel accommodation and may also have to pay for another air ticket to get back home.

They quote Simon Holt, from Skipton in Yorkshire, who had to pay an extra £1,000 so that his daughter and her friend could stay in their hotel in Portugal.

So let me get this clear in my mind. Looking at just this one company we have close on 140,000 people who are going to be hundreds , if not thousands, of pounds out-of-pocket.

They, in good faith, saved their money and then used it to pay for their vacation. Now they have had it ruined and they have the extra financial burden.

This is just one company. If you read the news you will know another that specialises in vacations in Turkey closed last week and over the past months there have been a steady stream.Stop losin g money

Do not be caught out!
Instead of paying a company loads of money to pack you like sardines onto one of their charter flights to an over populated resort, then being ‘organised’ by their rep throughout your stay in a small hotel room take the DIY approach.

Stay rent-free in a private house with all the home comforts.

Plan your own itinerary.

Go home having rested, enjoyed your time away and having saved a lot of money.

How? Use the worldwide services of Christian House Sitters.

You could be enjoying a rent-free vacation in one of the many other houses that we get all over the world.

Also if you need someone honest, reliable and with references to look after your home and if necessary your pets while you are away. Even if you are not in one of our houses. We will help you find someone free-of-charge.
You will never know if you do not try
Will this work for you?

Live Longer and Happier

Live Longer

A 2011 study by the State University of New York at Oswego that surveyed 12,000 men between ages 35 and 57, found that men who go on vacation every year reduce their overall risk of death by 20%. While men who didn’t take any vacations in five years had the highest death rate and incidence of heart disease than any other men surveyed.

Experts from the University of Pittsburgh and Radboud University both said that people had more energy and felt more satisfied with life on vacation.

A Wisconsin Medical Journal published findings that women who take two or more vacations a year are less likely to be depressed, tired, or unhappy with their marriage. They found that women who took frequent vacations were less likely to become depressed, tense, or tired. Women who rarely took vacations were likelier to have stress at home and sleep less.

Research published by Standard Life says that taking a vacation can:

Relieve stressStress. What Stress?
The very first benefit of leaving everything behind and relieving your brain of all your worries is reduced stress.

Several studies have shown a direct link between stress and health conditions such as headaches, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and other types of infections acquired as a result of a weaker immune system. It has also been scientifically established that taking vacations reduces the incidence of burnout.

Relief from stress often gives us a new perspective on life, allows us to regain energy and often to find simple and sometimes obvious solutions to problems that had previously seemed impossible to solve.

Active MindImprove your mental skills
Some studies have found a positive relationship between vacations and intellectual function. A well-rested mind that is free of worry is often more effective.

Improve your physical health
Besides getting you away from daily stressors, a vacation often gives you the opportunity to catch up on sleep and exercise, two simple remedies for many aches and pains.

Strengthen family tiesFamily at beach
Too often, in our fast-paced daily routine, family relationships suffer. A vacation is a great opportunity to discover each other in a different setting and to build lasting memories.

Help you to enjoy life
Taking time off can be a great opportunity to meet new people, laugh and do the things that you most enjoy!

Who is your role model?

Last week my post was very long. But thanks for those who said you appreciated it.

To keep the balance this week it is really short.
2 Pastors disagree

If you agree with the second pastor then remember God said we need to take time out to recharge our batteries. That is why we have a ‘day of rest’

Research shows that missing vacations can lower productivity, increase stress, harm the immune system and do a whole lot of damage. In previous posts I have given details about some of these problems and the research.

So plan a break. Plan it now while you are thinking about it.

Remember we can arrange for someone to look after your home and your pets FREE of charge.

We can also help you find rent FREE accommodation all over the world.

Some Health Benefits Of Taking A Vacation

It is really very important to take a vacation to reduce stress, whether it’s a few weekends sprinkled throughout the year or one longer break.

(Source: Laing S, Garet B, Cawley K, Crabtree S. Year-Round and Extended-Year Schooling. Department of Economics at the University of Georgia. )

Here’s whyCat Resting

But how will my co-workers manage in my absence?

There’s a common assumption that we’re indispensable at work. That, in our absence, everything will fall apart at the office. It won’t. While it may make you feel good about your contributions to the company, it’s unhealthy — both for the company’s growth and for office morale. By taking time off, you provide team members with the opportunity to develop their skills to manage projects while you’re away.  Know that when you’re away, portions of your work, tasks, and projects can be allocated to fellow team members. And, likewise, when it’s their turn to get away, you’ll have their backs too.

Gain Long-Term VisionLong Term View

There’s a connection between taking regular breaks during the day and your level of productivity. According to one study, researchers found that “brief diversions from a task can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on that task for prolonged periods.” So ditch the guilt and stretch your legs. Employees need to detach from their work in order to be more creative and productive.

While mini breaks can provide short-term stamina, it’s still important to take longer breaks from work to sustain your productivity and reduce stress.

Tight schedule? If work commitments are really pressing down on your time, take a 3-4 day trip closer to home.

Vacation time also lets you pursue other interests. For leaders, being away from your work environment for a longer period of time will allow you to gain a fresh perspective on the vision you have for your organization. For employees, summer vacations offer time to reflect on new ways that you can help your team accomplish long-term projects.

 Set an ExampleSleeping Koala

Americans aren’t taking vacations. Not because they can’t afford them, but, according to research, because the average American is afraid to take time off from work for fear of not appearing dedicated to their job. In a survey from workforce consulting firm Right Management, 70 percent of employees said they weren’t using all their earned vacation days in 2011.

Team leaders can demonstrate to employees that they understand the importance and necessity of having time off to relax. If you’re a supervisor, set an example to your staff. Show the importance of taking vacations by taking one yourself. Discuss with employees that they need time off to de-stress, that it is in fact healthy to get away from the office. Time away will increase their productivity once they return, rested and relaxed.

Cultivate Family BondsFamily Bonds

If you’re a parent, taking a vacation with your kids can create much-needed quality time as a family. According to the Disney Time Survey, a blind study conducted by Kelton Research, quality family time not only increases while on vacation but parents and children say they are more likely to learn something new about one another during this time, as opposed to when at home.

Here’s what results revealed: 97 percent of parents felt their kids got to know new things about them while on a family trip, and quality time spent with kids, as reported by parents, boosted to 82 percent. And vacationing together as a family made family members more inclined to be more excited (77 percent), relaxed (75 percent), silly (68 percent), calm (54 percent) and even more affectionate (54 percent).

Be Like A Baby to Boost Creativity Full of energy

Alison Gopnik, professor of psychology and director of the cognitive development lab at the University of California at Berkeley has studied the minds of babies and young children. Her research has led her to understand key differences between babies’ brains and the adult brain. By adulthood, adults have learned how to “dampen down” most areas of our brains, according to Gopnik.

We use one area to specifically focus on one thing or task. Babies and young children, however, haven’t yet developed the ability to pay attention intently to one thing, becoming captivated by multiple stimuli, spreading their attention “all over the place.”

“All adults have the potential to continue to experience the world in some of the ways that children do,” Gopnik told Charlie Rose in an interview. “I think a nice example is like when we go to a foreign city for the first time, and suddenly we’re all like babies. We’re in a world that’s new and rich and everything around us is unexpected…we go to the new place, we have to learn something new and suddenly we experience everything in a new way.”

New stimuli — faces, places, smells, tastes — can help unlock creative ideas. Even if you don’t work in a creative field like the arts or entertainment, tapping into your creativity releases a sense of playfulness and fun, a return to that child-like wonder and curiosity, and can help you sort through challenges at work or in life.

Toss your guilt about leaving the office behind for a little while. Spend time with your family, pursue personal interests, or simply take pleasure in some private down-time.

BUT I CAN’T AFFORD IT.

There are only 2 answers to that common cry.

You actually can’t afford not to take a break. Your health, family life and usefulness demand that you do this.

You CAN afford more than you realised. Some of the biggest costs associated with a vacation are the price of accommodation and the price of having someone look after your own home and pets while you are away. Through Christian House Sitters these are made available FREE OF CHARGE.

An Easy, Fun Way to Save Your Life

Warning Signs
Warning Signs

Stress, Depression and Heart Disease are some of the leading killers of this century. Everyone is at risk and we bombarded with advice about diet, exercise, weight control etc. These are all important and I am not seeking to negate them but there is another factor that good solid scientific research has shown to also be vital to preventing theses killers striking.

A solution that is enjoyable, fun, and something to look forward to with eager anticipation and to look back on with fond and lasting memories.

In brief research shows that not taking a regular vacation will significantly increase your risk of death from a heart attack.  I will not go into all the details but will simply summarize a few studies and provide links so you can read them in full if you wish.

In a study of 13,000 middle-aged men at risk for heart disease, those who skipped vacations were found to be 30 percent more likely to suffer heart attacks than those who took at least one week off each year. Even missing one year’s vacation was associated with a higher risk of heart disease. Full report

A separate study, tapping information from the Framingham Heart Study, found vacation deprivation may be equally hazardous for women. Researchers looked at 20 years worth of questionnaires given to 749 women. Their finding: Women who took a vacation once every six years or less were almost eight times more likely to develop coronary heart disease or have a heart attack than those who took at least two vacations a year.  Full Report

A study conducted among 1,500 women in rural Wisconsin found that those who take vacations twice a year or more were less likely to become tense, depressed or tired than those who took vacations once every two years. In addition, the odds of marital satisfaction decreased as the frequency of vacations decreased. Full Report Depression

Finally a sample of 887 law firm lawyers in Canada found that participating in active and social leisure activities and taking a vacation are important in reducing lawyers’ depression Full Report

Americans are at greater risk than those living in most other countries. This is because most countries in Europe have a legal requirement to give staff an annual vacation of between 20 and 30 days (varies between countries. Australia and New Zealand mandate at least 20 days off. Canada only insists on 10 days a year and America has no legal minimum.

There is the mistaken idea that it would cost business too much but that is simply not correct. As an example Jancoa, a Cincinnati janitorial service firm, for example, decreased its employee turnover from 360 percent to 60 percent while simultaneously increasing its productivity with the addition of a week of vacation. Full Report

The Chicago office of Price Waterhouse Coopers, the worldwide accounting firm, once dedicated an entire issue of its in-house newsletter to the importance of taking a vacation, pointing out that vacations enable employees to return to work with a strong focus and energy. Full Article

So start making plans NOW. Your life may depend on it.

BUT I can’t afford it!

In the USA 34% of those asked said that they can’t afford to take their full vacation. Now that is really sad! We all know how important a vacation is for your mental and physical health. Cutting it down because of cost is not necessary.

We can help you!Free

Superstorm Sandy. Be warned another danger is approaching

America is battling to recover from Superstorm Sandy.

As I watch the TV coverage my heart goes out to the people who have lost their lives, their homes and their jobs and all I can do is pray that somehow God will sort it all out.

Thankfully there was advance warning that Sandy was approaching and as a result many hundreds of thousands of people were able to evacuate and I am sure this saved many lives.

It is going to take a long time for the country to fully recover and the financial cost could impact on Americans lives for a long time.

But I have some more bad news.

There is another storm coming!

This will not be due to a hurricane and the damage will not be to houses and the transportation system. This storm will hit people psychologically and physically. It will result in loss of income, poor health and sadly even death for some of the victims.

What am I talking about?

I am talking about burn-out.

I was sent a copy of a report from the Daily Mail. They state, and I quote

A survey of U.S. and Canadian employers found nearly two-thirds are asking their employees to work longer hours since the recession. And about half of the 300 companies asked expect the trend to continue for another three years. The worrying trend seems to have been particularly bad for senior and middle managers, according to the Towers Watson survey. The survey also discovered that it is not only the length of the working day that has been affected,  but the amount of time off. One in three of respondents said their employees had been taking less time off during the working year.

It continues   Laurie Bienstock from Towers Watson added: ‘In the short run, having employees work extra hours can increase productivity, but in the long run, extended hours can negatively affect employee well-being and retention.’

Yes it is true.

The human body needs to have time off. We were designed to have periods of rest and recovery and we ignore that at our peril.

Dog and cat asleep
Is this how you are feeling?

Countless studies have shown that not taking a vacation is a false economy as it can lead to burn-out and many health problems. It also makes us far less efficient at work, more prone to making mistakes and to having accidents. We are also more likely to have major disagreements with our family, colleagues and even our clients.

Evacuate Now.

Get yourself out of the danger zone by planning a vacation. Take the necessary precautions to protect yourself, your loved ones and to help you remain a productive member of society.

It does not need to cost a fortune! Christian House Sitters can help you! We can arrange for someone to look after your home and pets while you are away and that will not cost you anything We can even help you find rent-free accommodation all over the world. No not in some dingy dump but often in beautiful houses located in lovely places where apart from relaxing and having fun your only responsibility will be to look after the house while the owner and their family also enjoy a vacation.

Sounds too good to be true.

I know but it is true. Have a look at our website. Read the many press clippings in our Media coverage page on the website. Then if you have any questions contact me and I will try to help you.

God bless you

Happy man and money
With our help you can probably afford that vacation
