“A Diary of House-Sitting Tails”

A diary of house-sitting tails

I am naturally always interested to read about House Sitting so when I found out about a book called “A Diary of House-Sitting Tails” by Carolyn Slingsby I downloaded a copy from Amazon.

I was thrilled to read about our ministry in this book!

Here is an extract from the first couple of pages:

At the end of November 2008, after living and working in Spain for six years, my husband and I suddenly and devastatingly lost everything, and had no choice but to head back to the UK.

Brian and I had gone to Spain six years previously in 2002, knowing nobody there at all, and we began totally from scratch. I knew I had to find my feet, so I quickly became resourceful in finding jobs, mainly in the property market. At one time, I helped a company to sell villas and apartments, focusing mainly on marketing, but I had other duties, too. Once, I had to do a complete ‘makeover’ on a property, which turned out to be a total full cleaning and fumigation exercise. The property in question was in a terrible condition, covered in excrement and filth which stank to high heaven; he had kept five dogs there, and hadn’t done much in the way of cleaning! Eventually –after hours of cleaning and sorting –I managed to find a buyer, but it still smelled if you were downwind! It was only months later that I realised why I was so ill after that experience.

We loved Spain and its people, and it was our fantastic church community who helped us through the very traumatic ending to our lifestyle there, when –due to the economic climate –we lost our villa and all our money, and had only forty-eight hours to leave and hand the keys back to the bank.

Our compassionate congregation bought all our furniture, including the wood burning stove and very large satellite dish (which went off on the roof of an estate car!), to raise us enough money for petrol to drive back to the UK. We stored ten boxes, containing our various small everyday goods, in the under-house storage of one of those kind church folk, where it ended up staying for two years!

So, back in the UK and having to start again from scratch, we knew we had to survive and get a roof over our heads whilst we worked out what direction life was taking us in.

This was when God led us to The Christian House Sitters website! We found two separate house sits in France on our way back to the UK in December and January 2008-2009, and so began our ‘Tails of House Sitting’ –adventures and experiences we would have missed out on if not for the traumatic ending of our life in Spain!

The book is a lot of fun and well worth reading.

If you have interesting stories about House Sitting please share them with me.

Would you like a break from your normal daily grind. Time to getaway, relax, renew relationships, rest, have fun and generally recharge your inner batteries.

Exhausted but Blessed

Sleeping wrinkled dogSorry that I have not posted anything for a couple of weeks but life has been really hectic.

Naturally this is a time when Christian House Sitters can become rather hectic with people looking for a last minute vacation, or for someone to look after their home and animals while they are away.

I have no idea why but so many people only seem to realise that they need something in the final 2 weeks before Christmas.

Still it is a blessing to be able to help (most of) them.

With Christmas fast approaching there are also so many things that we needed to organise for the Children’s Home that we run. Their new school year starts in January so on top of the normal we have had to sort out 52 new school uniforms, sets of books, etc. Plus arrange Christmas for our 52 children plus the staff and their 20 children. We have also just appointed a Social Worker and a new House Mother for the children.

The result is that Marilyn and I are exhausted!Exhausted

But the good news is that in January we will be off to Southern Spain for a much needed vacation.

We very seldom take advantage of the houses made available through Christian House Sitters. Our last real vacation was about 4 years ago. We prefer to make the houses available to our members instead but we felt God wanted us to have a break and so we booked this house sit for ourselves.

It sounds fantastic. Southern Spain near both mountains and lakes yet not far from the sea. The house itself looks fabulous in the photographs that we have seen. Once we are there I will no doubt post pictures and tell you all about it.

Vacation scene

We thank God for this provision. Without Christian House Sitters we could not have afforded a vacation but now we get to stay in a fabulous house, in a lovely area and it is rent-free.

Warning. Do not be ripped off.

I was listening to a radio programme yesterday as I drove home from doing some chores.

Tiny CarThey were chatting about the cost of car hire at an airport vs. at a city depot. The programme had compared the same car, for the same dates and from the same hire company. They did this for, if I remember correctly, 4 different car hire companies and at a couple of different airports.

The price difference was staggering. On average it costs at least double to rent the car at the airport. In the most extreme case the fee from the city depot was £300 for a 1 week hire but the same car, from the same company if hired at the airport was a mind-blowing £1,600.

During the programme a listener got in touch from Spain saying she had discovered that she could save €400 by going to the Malaga airport, using their free Wi-Fi and booking a car as opposed to walking a few steps the desk and booking it in person.
Horse pulling car
Hire companies tried to justify the difference by talking about higher overheads etc

With Christian House Sitters we can save you a fortune by offering you rent-free accommodation all over the world and fairly often the owners allow you to use their car free of charge as long as you cover the insurance but naturally there are also a lot of houses where they can’t make a vehicle available for you so please be warned we do not control the car hire companies so check before you fly.

We would like to serve you as well

Today we feature Christine Smith

Christine Middleton Smith is British. She is the daughter of a minister and played a major part in her parents’ ministry. She married Chris, a minister’s son, who also played a major part in his parents’ ministry. Chris is a Minister, a Bible college lecturer, missionary, and itinerant preacher in UK, USA, Romania, Spain.

In the 1960s, Chris and Christine toured the UK as ‘Kris and Kristine’ – The Sunshine Evangelists’ Christine was a children’s evangelist during this period.

In 1970, They were called in a dramatic and unique way, to take the gospel to Spanish gypsies living in caves in a remote and unknown mountainous part of Southern Spain. It was during the cruel rule of General Franco. They were surprised on their arrival to discover that they were the very first missionaries to arrive in the area and were confronted with danger from the system.

 Books by Christine Smith

Be prepared to be engrossed from start to finish, by a truly inspiring and unique story, and one that touches every emotion.

This fascinating and unusual story, is set in Spain’s poverty-stricken deep South, during the cruel rule of General Franco. The author and her husband, along with their two young children, gave up everything in UK, to evangelise the Gypsies living in the remote caves of Almeria, Spain. Their denomination had been unable to back them due to financial constraints. Although confused, after having received such a dramatic calling, they felt it was some spiritual test, to see if they would have gone had it been possible. However, some time later, they were both inspired at separate times, on reading Hebrews chapter 11, and took a giant leap of faith. Unknown to them, they would be the first missionaries to arrive in the area, and were confronted with danger and extreme opposition.

In an unwelcoming, bug-ridden, lonely wilderness, Christine realised she had not only left behind her home, country, and family, but also the many Christian contacts and resources for spiritual stimulation and growth. All she had, was her Bible. A painful journey lay head, of  learning how to walk alone with God, and learning how to walk by faith. She also discovered that the very basic utilities she had taken for granted back home, would be absolute luxuries, in a place where a drop of water was as precious as gold!

If you want to laugh, cry, or need an uplift; if you want to boost your faith, or would like to measure your faith in a most enthralling way; or if you have any interest in Spain, this book is for you.

Christine’s has been asked time and again over many years to have her journals published, but has always declined.  However, compelled by this Scripture, she went ahead, in the hope that her story would be of help to others, “God who comforts us in trial, so that we may be able to comfort others” ( 2 Corinthians 1:4).

Christine has taken her unique experiences from her journals, and written them into a captivating page-turner. Readers comment how they read this book time and again.

Her personal journey of faith, has encouraged others to find added strength to get through their own particular challenge.

Eighteen Chapters in all

Chapters include:

It Could Take Faith… to walk all alone!

Could you do better than Michelle Obama?

Michelle Obama

I was fascinated, and to be honest upset, by an article that appeared in the Daily Mail  yesterday. Remember this is set against a time of great economic difficulty in the USA. A time when many families are having real difficulty making ends meet.

They  quoted White House sources who claimed that the First Lady has spent $10 million of U.S. taxpayers’ money on vacations alone in the past year.

The article continued:

The First Lady is believed to have taken 42 days of holiday in the past year, including a $375,000 break in Spain and a four-day ski trip to Vail, Colorado, where she spent $2,000 a night on a suite at the Sebastian hotel.

And the first family’s nine-day stay in Martha’s Vineyard is also proving costly, with rental of the Blue Heron Farm property alone costing an estimated $50,000 a week.

I thought about this excess and then compared it to one of our housesitters who recently completed a 12 month round the world trip. He and his wife started from England and visited New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, America, Canada, Spain and France. Because he planned it carefully he was able to find suitable house sits for all but 2 weeks of the 12 month vacation and so his vacation rent bill for 50 of their 52 weeks trip of a lifetime came to a total of ZERO.

Now I am sure that their accommodation was not up to the same standard as Michelle Obama enjoyed at either the $2.000 a night Sebastian hotel. or that the family will enjoy for $50,000 per week at Martha’s Vineyard but this couple told me that their accommodation was always up to a very good standard. They stayed in houses in the city, farms out in the country and everything in between. At a number of places they were even given the free use of a motor car.

Most of our sitters only want a couple of weeks in a single location but even then their savings by house sitting can be tremendous.

So if you are keen to enjoy a rent-free vacation please take some time to look at our website or to contact me with your questions.

Remember you will be staying rent-free, you will be in the home of a Christian who is away and grateful that you are looking after their house and finally please remember 100% of your annual membership fees (just £25 for a year) goes to help feed hungry children.

Christian House Sitters is a Ministry not a business.

God bless you,

Ray
