Worldwide Christian Ministry.

I am often asked to explain what Christian House Sitters is all about. because it is Christmas I decided to make my life a little easier by simply reproducing an article that appeared a while ago in JOY MAGAZINE.

The only correction I would make is that the article says we plan to increase the percentage of income that we donate to the Children’s Home in Kenya. Well we can’t increase it any further as we give 100% of all income.

If you are starting to think about your next vacation why not look at our website. We may be able to help you.

God bless you,

You CAN afford a good vacation!

You CAN afford a good vacation!

I have just finished reading the Expedia Vacation Deprivation Study

They say that the Expedia’s Vacation Deprivation study is an annual analysis of vacation habits across multiple countries and continents.

It is a fascinating but rather depressing study and you can see it in full here

But there is an answer.

According to this study the vast majority of American workers do not take their full vacation allocation even though they are only entitled to 14 days per year while in the UK the entitlement is 25 days and Germany and France it is 30 days. Seems to me the Americans are being short-changed and they really need to use their 14 days but they do not with most only taking 12 days a year off work.

Why?

The study looks at the reasons for people not taking their full entitlement and the reason is the same everywhere …. money! In the USA 34% said that they can’t afford to take their full vacation.

Now that is really sad! We all know how important a vacation is for your mental and physical health. Cutting it down because of cost is not necessary.

We can help you!

How?

Register with Christian House Sitters and you can enjoy rent-free vacations all over the world. We can also arrange for a Christian to look after your home and pets while you are away.

Some Strange Canadian Laws

Over the past few weeks we have had two very different series running on this blog. Articles by well-known Christian authors suggesting some vacation reading and articles featuring odd laws from around the world.

Today we continue our Odd Laws and this time we are focusing on Canada.

Why are we looking at odd laws? Well really because I personally find them amusing and interesting but my official excuse is that with Christian House Sitters  you could end up having wonderful rent-free vacations all over the world so you need to be informed.

horseIn Quesnel, British Columbia you must not exercise in a manner that frightens a horse – without permission

You may have thought of moving to St. John’s Newfoundland to raise cows. If you are successful in your quest, remember not to drive your cattle through the streets of the city after 8:00 am. There is nothing to stop you from doing so before that time, however, as long as they are trained to obey traffic lights and stop signs.

In Nova Scotia a person is not allowed to water their grass when it’s raining. Not like someone would do this, but it’s against the law in Nova Scotia!

In Cobourg, Ontario if you have a water trough in your front yard, it must be filled by 5:00am!

In Ottawa, Ontario you are not allowed to eat ice cream on Bank St on a Sunday!Ice Cream

In Fort Qu’Appelle Quebec it is illegal for a teen to walk downtown main street with his shoes untied?

In London, Ontario it is against the city by-law to allow your grass in your front yard to grow any taller than an inch and a half. If you do, the city will come by and cut it for you then give you a fine for $200.

Alberta Provincial Laws state that it is illegal to set fire to the wooden leg of a wooden-legged man

LoveWhile in Wawa it is illegal to show public affection on Sunday.

In Montreal The Queen Elizabeth Hotel must feed your horse freely when you rent a room.

The Law is an Ass – Funny examples

The law is an ass.Ass

This expression is of English origin and the ass being referred to here is the English colloquial name for a donkey, not the American ‘ass’, which we will leave behind us at this point. Many attribute the phrase to Charles Dickens, who  in Oliver Twist,  wrote when Mr. Bumble, the unhappy spouse of a domineering wife, is told in court that “…the law supposes that your wife acts under your direction”, replies:
If the law supposes that,” said Mr. Bumble, squeezing his hat emphatically in both hands, “the law is an ass – an idiot”.

We will return to the law in a moment but allow me to digress for a couple of lines.

One of the joys of running Christian House Sitters is having contact with people from all over the world. Only this week we were asked to offer a farm in Argentina rent free on a long term basis. One never knows what is coming next.

But as our members travel around the world I thought it was time to introduce you to a few of the really strange laws from different countries.

We start with the United Kingdom

Houses of ParliamentIt is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament
According to legal experts, as parliament is still classed as a royal palace, any death of an MP (or Lord) would in theory have required members of the royal household to sit as the coroner’s jury. As this raises all sorts of questions of parliamentary privilege, such as the right to a state funeral, the polite convention arose that no parliamentarian dies until they are safely in the ambulance to a hospital.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It could be regarded an act of treason to place a postage stamp bearing the British king or queen’s image upside-down.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Eating mince pies on Christmas Day is banned .

Oops I guess that makes me a criminal. Sorry your honour I never knew that law existed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the UK, a pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The head of any dead whale found on the British coast automatically becomes the property of the King, and the tail of the Queen.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is illegal not to tell the tax man anything you do not want him to know, but legal not to tell him information you do not mind him knowing .
I just love the logic behind this one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It is illegal to enter the Houses of Parliament wearing a suit of armour.cop

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
London hackney carriages (Cab or Taxi) must carry a bale of hay and a sack of oats.
The London Hackney Carriage Laws have stayed the same for over a hundred years, and still apply to modern-day taxis. The oats and hay were for the horse, of course. Disputes still arise, and some firms have manufactured tiny bales of hay, so taxi drivers can stay within the law.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Over the next few weeks I will feature strange laws from other places so if you know any do send them to me.

Meanwhile remember if you want someone to look after your home and pets while you are away or if you would like a rent free vacation the place to look is our website. CLICK HERE

Hilarious Translation Clanger Causes Chaos

mistranslated Welsh road sign

Miscommunication can be caused by so many different things

The road sign in the picture is, to my mind, a classic.

In Wales all road signs must be in both English and Welsh so when officials were putting up a new road sign they emailed the details to the official translation service, they thought the reply was what they needed, and the sign was painted and put up.

Unfortunately, the e-mail response to Swansea council actually said in Welsh: “I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated”.

The notice went up and all seemed well – until Welsh speakers began pointing out the embarrassing error.

Good intentions and officials who thought that they had done a good job but sadly a sign that carried absolutely the wrong message to the Welsh drivers.

Working as we do in the area of House Sitting we realise just how easily people can misunderstand a message. As a result at Christian House Sitters we try our best to build in a lot of safety nets so that nobody is either misled or confused.

All our home owners are asked a lot of specific questions about the house for which they want a sitter. Questions ranging from the number of available bedrooms down to the kitchen appliances and the availability of TV, phone line and internet access. We also ask owners to supply a picture of the house.

We also encourage both owners and sitters to have everything put down in writing before they house sit is agreed. (We even provide a draft template to make this easy).

In our experience these steps lead to much greater clarity for the potential sitters. Sitters know what is being offered and what will be expected from them before they agree to take on the house sit.

Being clear before finalising a house sit means that both parties feel secure, happy and benefit from the arrangement.

The Sitters enjoy their rent-free vacation without any nasty surprises and the Owners have their home and pets looked after free of charge by happy sitters.

If you are interested in having someone look after your home and pets while you are away please register as an owner. Remember it will not cost you anything.

If you would like to have a rent-free vacation (we have homes available all over the world) then register as a Sitter

Full details are on our website or if you have questions you can contact me.

God bless you,

Ray

My Birthday

old manYesterday was my birthday.

Birthdays are always rather special and to me this one was another of those important milestones along the road of life as I turned 65 and officially became an Old Age Pensioner.

But I’m going to live by the comment from Francis Bacon who said. “I will never be an old man. To me, old age is always 15 years older than I am”

In the build-up towards my birthday I put a request on my Facebook page asking my friends to help me celebrate this milestone by making a donation, no matter how small, towards the support of the children’s home that Christian House Sitters finances in Kenya.

I would love to say that I was overwhelmed by the response but that would be dishonest. Only one of our friends made a donation and that was for £5.00. I can understand the reason finances are difficult and most people are already committed or indeed over committed.

Some people expressed surprise that I wanted a donation to go to this cause.

I was surprised that they were surprised. After all 100% of the income from Christian House Sitters goes to help support, feed and clothe these needy children.

Christian House Sitters is a ministry not a money-making business.

We can help you

We help Christians all over the world who need to take a vacation but are finding money a little less available than they would have liked. If you fall into this category you can register a house sitter with us and we will keep you informed about rent-free vacations all around the world.

We also help Christian home owners who are planning to go away and need someone to look after their home and animals whilst they are away. This can be very expensive but we provide the service through our house sitters and it does not cost you as  the owner anything at all. It is completely free of charge.

The sitters reward is rent-free accommodation. We charge a very nominal fee of just £25 per year to be registered as a sitter and all of this money goes to these needy children. Marilyn and I personally cover the cost of running the ministry and do not take anything out from the income that is received.

The owner’s reward is having somebody look after their home and pets free of charge. Registered home owners do not even pay the annual registration fee.

The other people who benefit from Christian House Sitters are, as I mentioned, the children in Kenya.

So let us help each other?
If you are looking forward to having a vacation and would be interested in house sitting please make contact.

If you’re a home owner and are concerned about having somebody reliable to look like you’re home and pets please get in touch.

If you feel that you would like to make a donation, no matter how small, to help these needy children then we would also love to hear from you.

Finally please can you help us to make this ministry more widely known?

Tell your friends.

Mention it to your church.

Ask your church to put a link on their website and an article in the newsletter.

The more members we have the better for everyone.

More sitters will benefit our owners.

More owners will benefit our sitters.

More members will benefit the needy children.

God bless you,

Ray.

Russia offers what we can’t (yet)

Fantasy house in spaceI am so thankful to everyone who forwards me interesting articles. The latest is from The Gadgeteer dated 28th August and it made fascinating reading. (full article http://bit.ly/qbZEbn)

Here is an extract:

If you can’t wait until 2020 to take a vacation on Virgin’s Spaceship to an orbital tour of outer space, then make a reservation in 2016 for the Russian Space Hotel.

The cost is a bit steep at $818,000 to travel via a Soyuz rocket to the hotel, and then another $163,000 for five days and four nights.  A family of four should get ready for some sticker shock as they would need to spend $4 million for a vacation in space, but think about the reports the kids would deliver in school the next week.

I am sorry but Christian House Sitters can’t compete with that (yet).

We are still only able to offer you a rent-free vacation on Earth.

But we do have a really good selection of places where you can go. Naturally the list of available properties keeps changing. Listed houses find a sitter and are removed and new properties are added.

Looking at the available list right now I see that we have lovely rent-free homes available in:

Canada
New Zealand
England
Wales
Australia
USA
France
Spain

So nothing in Space but at least you don ‘t have to fork out $4 million for your vacation.

If you are a home owner anywhere on Earth and you want someone to look after your home and your pets free of charge please have a look at our website. Registering as a home owner is free and so you have nothing to lose.

To find out more please visit our website or contact me.

I Almost Felt Guilty

trainAs I was reading the news on the BBC website a few minutes ago I almost felt guilty.

According to 2 reports that they published this morning people staying at home instead of going on holidays are helping to boost passenger numbers on some rural train lines. The rail authorities appear to be delighted.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14580224
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14582886

I am sure that is very good news for the rail companies and for people who live in some rural communities.

So why do I feel guilty?

Well to be honest I don’t. I said that I almost felt guilty. But after I thought about it for a few minutes the guilt evaporated.

My initial pang was because through the work of  Christian House Sitters we are helping so many people all over the world get away and enjoy a well deserved and often desperately needed holiday. Therefore, according to the articles, we are slowing the growth of rail passenger numbers and so harming small communities.

I disagree!

I am convinced that having a local resident go away for a couple of weeks during a year has a minimal effect on rail passenger numbers. But keeping the local residents physically and mentally more active because they were able to have a break may mean that in the long run they live longer so the railway and the community will benefit.

In addition bringing in visitors to an area boosts the local economy and many visitors will choose to make use of the train service during their holiday.

So Christian House Sitters will continue with a clear conscience.

I believe the service we offer helps everybody.

Our sitters enjoy a rent-free holiday. Our registered owners get someone to house sit and pet sit free of charge while they are away and our ministry gives all our income to feed hungry children.

As a result sitters benefit, owners benefit, children benefit and the local economy gets a boost.

To find out how we can help you enjoy a better holiday please have a look at our website or contact me.

Catch 22, Vacations and House Sitting.

Catch 22Wikipedia says that Catch-22 is a satirical, historical novel by the American author Joseph Heller, first published in 1961. The novel, set during World War II in 1943, is frequently cited as one of the great literary works of the twentieth century.

As you read the novel you discover that Catch 22 refers to an impossible choice. Whatever you decide will be the wrong decision.

So what on earth has that to do with Vacations or House Sitting?

Be patient all will soon be revealed.

Living in England I don’t often get to read the L A Times but I was very interested when  a friend sent me a copy of an article they published today under the headline

Memo to U.S. workers: Take a break

Allow me to quote some selected paragraphs. (Full article can be found at http://lat.ms/qy2G6R )

Americans ….. gripe about how they don’t get enough vacation time. For once, our whining is justified. Each year we work more and enjoy fewer vacation days than most other industrialized nations.

Indeed, you’d think that vacations are something all Americans could get behind. They’re pro-family, they’re good for our health (those who take regular vacations are less likely to die of heart disease, according the famous Framingham Heart Study and others) and, studies have found, they increase worker productivity and creativity.

If companies are serious about keeping their employees fresh, they should require workers either to use their allotted vacation time or face a financial penalty. This is not as absurd as it seems. After all, companies require that employees show up at a certain time, and meet certain productivity goals. Why not require that they recharge their batteries? That would not be an act of charity, but a smart business move. A rested worker is a more productive worker

I was astounded to read that Americans enjoy fewer vacation days than most other industrialized nations. That is wrong!

There should naturally be a balance  and the quote in the article from President Taft seems, in my opinion, to go too far in the opposite direction. I quote

In 1910, President Taft, no bleeding-heart liberal by any means, suggested that all workers get two to three months’ vacation each year. “The American people have found out that there is such a thing as exhausting the capital of one’s health and constitution.”

President Taft went too far but he was right that working without sufficient time to relax and recharge can cause serious physical and emotional problems.

This leads to a Catch 22 situation.

You know you need a vacation but you feel unable to afford one. So you work harder to make ends meet and because you did not have that much-needed break your health suffers, you become less efficient and as a result need the break even more but now have less money to spend.

The impossible choice. Do I take a vacation and get into financial difficulty or do I keep working and risk my health and my family?

We would like to help you enjoy a good vacation and at the same time save money.

Christian House Sitters is a worldwide ministry that exists to help you in this sort of situation. By registering as a Home Owner (It is Free) you benefit from being able to leave your home and animals in the care of a Christian who you have confidence will love the animals and care for you property honestly. You have the added security of being able to ask prospective House Sitters for a reference from their Church leaders. As a result you can go away without having to worry about your home and animals.

You can also save the cost of renting vacation accommodation by registering as a House Sitter. That will give you access to rent-free accommodation all over the world.

Our service has already helped many people from around the world . Let us help you.

Contact us, you have nothing to lose and we may well be able to help you have a far better vacation than you thought possible without some of those expenses.

Ray

Advice to Home Owners looking for a Housesitters

AdviceIn my last blog post I gave some top tips for House Sitters and promised to follow-up with advice for those who are wanting a sitter.

The most important thing to remember is that you need to be very clear about what you are offering and what you want in return before agreeing a house sit.

We advise you to give at least the following basic information to your House Sitters. A description of the  available accommodation including the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, the kitchen facilities such as microwave, cooker etc, any heating facilities such as central heating, open fire etc., your laundry facilities, the availability of a phone, computer access and TV.

Make sure that the sitter knows exactly what you are expecting from them If you have animals be sure that they are used to and comfortable with animals. Tell them what is needed such as not leaving the animals for longer than a certain period, walking dogs etc.

Always check references before agreeing to accept a sitter.

At Christian House Sitters we strongly advise that all arrangements are put down in writing and signed by both parties. Our website contains a general draft agreement that you can adapt.

When the sitter arrives please leave them with information about local facilities such as your church, your doctor, the nearest hospital, public transport and your emergency contact number. If they will be looking after your pets don’t forget to leave the details about your vet.

If you leave food please make it very clear to the Sitters if you expect them to use it or to use and then replace it.

We highly recommend that House Sitters arrive at least a day before the Home Owner departs in order to get to know the home and animals.

House sitting is a real blessing to both owners and sitters when it is planned and arranged correctly. If you have any questions you can probably find the answer on our website. See the FAQ page, The House Sitting Explained page, The Suggested Agreement page, and the Advice to Sitters page. You can also contact us via the contact page and we will always do our best to reply promptly and to answer your questions.

God bless you,
Ray
