Avoid the danger.

I was reading MSN Travel News yesterday and I was shocked by one of the articles.

The headline says
Brits are still flocking to terror hotpots for cheap deals despite Foreign Office advice not to.

The article continues:

Thousands of Brits are still heading to terror hotspot Tunisia to grab hotel deals at just £17 a night.
Leading websites are offering stays near the Sousse spot where 30 Britons were massacred by an Islamic State extremist in 2015.
Foreign Office advice is not to travel to the North African country amid fears jihadists could again target foreign visitors …………………. The Association of British Travel Agents says members should inform clients of advice from the Foreign Office.

Why?Danger Sign

Because prices have been greatly reduced in order to attract people to a place that they may otherwise not even consider because of the security implications.

The article quotes accommodation from as low as £17 per person per night.

I agree it is a low price. But even at that low price a 10 day break for a couple will still cost £340 for the accommodation in a place where the Foreign Office says you should not go because it is far too dangerous.

But people are short of money, need a break and so are willing to risk their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

Don’t do it.

Through Christian House Sitters you can enjoy a rent-free break in a safe place living in a comfortable house. There are opportunities all over the world.

2 Tips for a Better 2017

A new you for the new year

Phew 2016 was some year!

I am sure there have been many more difficult and stressful years but understandably 2016 is fresh in my memory.

Just a brief recap. It was the year of

  • UK Referendum on the EU
  • The American Presidential Campaign
  • The Rio Olympics
  • Multiple Terrorist attacks around the world
  • Hurricane Matthew killed 900 people
  • There are so many more but that will suffice.

Here is the GOOD NEWS.

2016 is finished. It is now 2017 and we enter a new year that holds to many unknowns. Exciting prospects, scary potentials and things that at the moment we can’t even really imagine.

Jump from 2016 to 2017
As you prepare for 2017 may I suggest that you consider doing 2 things that will help make your year better.

First surrender your life and your plans to God. I go forward in confidence because God knows what is in store and He remains in control no matter how bleak the circumstances may at times appear. He who gave His only son for you will never leave you.

You can trust Him. He really does love you and want what is best for you.

Second consider a vacation. A break from your normal daily grind. Time to get away, relax, renew relationships, rest, have fun and generally recharge your inner batteries.

We can help.

We offer rent-free vacations all over the world and, if necessary, we can also arrange for someone reliable to look after your home and pets free-of-charge while you are away

Boost your immune system.

The immune system Your immune system is your bodies defense against illness.

Functiond of Immune System

It is your protection against a host of potentially deadly problems

Today I was looking through the news on the BBC website and saw an article confirming something that I have said in these blogs on a number of occasions.

The BBC quoted research by Professor Fulvio D’Acquisto of the Queen Mary University in London. (you can read the full report at bbc.co.uk/news/health-37498719)

Here is an extract from the article.

The headline really says it all (For American readers holiday as used in this UK research means what you would call a vacation)

Prescribing holidays ‘could help fight infections’
30 September 2016
Sitting on the beach could be good for us and our immune system
Scientists are investigating whether prescribing holidays ……… might boost our immune system and help us to fight off disease.
In tests on mice, they discovered that sprucing up their living space, with a running wheel, toys and a colourful box, did wonders for their T cells.
These cells are essential for immunity and help to protect against disease.

Prof Fulvio D’Acquisto, lead study researcher from The Queen Mary University in London, said: “This effect is remarkable because we haven’t given them any drugs.
“All we’ve done is change their housing conditions.
You could say that we’ve just put them in their equivalent of a holiday resort for two weeks and let them enjoy their new and stimulating surroundings.”  ………….. Prof D’Acquisto says research shows that there is a link between emotional response and immune response.
No-one yet knows how this works but one theory is that heightened emotion makes bone marrow perform better, which in turn receives more nutrients, boosting the body’s immune system……………….

peace
I’m boosting my immune system – Why not join me?

You need it and deserve it.

To my regular readers an apology. I know that I have touched on this topic a few times in the past but it is so important and backed by so much new research that I felt it was worth mentioning it again.

Language. This blog is (thankfully) read all over the world. People in places like the UK use the term holiday and vacation interchangeably but most our US friends tend to see a holiday as something like Thanksgiving Day. I will therefore use the term Vacation to avoid confusion.on-vacation-2

Americans are not taking all of their earned vacation days. A 2014 survey revealed that while 96% of people recognize the importance of taking time off, 41% did not plan on taking all of their available vacation. Another survey showed that 42% of Americans did not take a single day of vacation in 2014.

This is bad for your health, your family, your mental well being and for your effectiveness at work!

Vacations are good for your health.

For example, a nine-year study, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, found that middle-aged people at high risk for heart disease who took regular annual vacations were 32% less likely to develop heart disease.

According to the Framingham heart study — a renowned longitudinal study of cardiovascular disease — women who vacationed frequently were less likely to have heart attacks or die of coronary-related reasons.

A Wisconsin study of 1,500 rural women demonstrated that frequent vacations led to less depression and tension, as well as greater energy and marital satisfaction.

Family
Families as a whole benefit from vacation, too. A poll found that 97% of parents with children aged 5 to 17 said their children learned more about them on family trips. Also, these getaways enable families to have more meals together and be sillier and more affectionate with each other.

Dr Lucy Goundry, Nuffield Health’s Medical Director, said: ‘Our clinical results show how vacations helped couples reduce their blood pressure, improve their sleep and manage their stress levels better. ‘These results clearly demonstrate that on vacation our ability to physically cope with stress improves.

Lady
Ladies this bit is specially for you.
Stress May Cause Fat Around the Midsection in Lean Women

Even some slender women have problems with fat. Research shows that lean women who are stressed-out may be more likely to have “spare tires” around their midsections -which increases their risk of certain diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. “Our findings support the idea that greater life stress and stress reactivity can contribute to central fat, especially among lean women,” says study author Elissa Epel, PhD. “For lean women, central fat may indicate an underlying sensitivity to stress rather than being in part a result of obesity.” Epel, who was a research scientist at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., when the study was conducted, is now with the Health Psychology Program at the University of California, San Francisco.

“When you have chronically elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol, you crave carbohydrates and fats, and these extra calories make a beeline to the inner abdomen, she explains. As levels of the female hormone estrogen change as women age, fat goes to the abdominal area instead of the hips and thighs, where it was formerly needed to support reproductive functions”. Dr. Peeke says.

So why do we not take the much needed break? Why?

We enjoy them.
We need them.
We want them
So what is the problem?

Research suggests that there are 2 main obsticals.

tired-lady
1. People are concerned that their job will not manage without them. Actually the research clearly shows that you will do a far better job with a break.

Vacation Makes You More Productive and Relaxed

Interestingly, the concept of leaving unused vacation days is practically unheard of in Europe. In fact, the European Union requires its citizens to receive at least 20 paid vacation days every year. (In contrast, U.S. companies are not legally required to give their employees any paid time off.)

This mandate stems from the idea that workers are not only less stressed when given time off, but that they come back more productive and less likely to burn out.

2. People feel that they simply can’t afford to take a decent vacation.

Let us help you. That is what we are here for.

As a registered house sitter you and your family will be offered a wide range of vacations all over the world. Totally rent-free.
But what about your home and pets? What will happen to them?
Again we can help. Register as a Home Owner (it is free) and we will help you find a suitable person to look after your home and pets free of charge.

My apologies for not having posted anything in this blog for ages. The reason, to quote one of my friends, is because I have been practicing what I preach.

I have pointed out that by using the services of Christian House Sitters money need no longer be the excuse because you can enjoy fabulous vacations all over the world rent free.

Protect yourself. Avoid this danger.

Sick at work Are you guilty of Presenteeism?

I have just read an article put out by the Press Association commenting on research carried out by The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

In their research they identified a significant problem with what they refer to as ‘presenteeism’ which they define as staff going in to work even though they are ill.

The study found that workers were more likely to go to the office while sick if long working hours were seen as the norm, or where operational demands took precedence over employee wellbeing.

Almost 60% of organisations reporting an increase in ‘presenteeism’ have not done anything to discourage it, said the report.

The problem was worse in the public sector amid pressure to deliver services in the face of austerity cuts, said the CIPD.

Ben Willmott, head of public policy at the CIPD, said: “This is the fifth year in a row in which employers have reported an increase in employees coming in to work when they are ill”.

This is dangerous. No sick days for 15 years

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) said “Companies where workers go to work ill were more likely be hit by stress-related absence among staff or mental health problems.”

To my mind this problem is closely related to another problem that I have highlighted in this blog on numerous occasions. Staff do not take their full vacation entitlement.

People seem to be afraid to take time off work when they are ill or even when they are due their annual vacation.  But as the research quoted above shows this can have a long term serious effect on your health and indeed your ability to keep working in the future.

I have previously mentioned the findings of research on missing your vacation. If you missed it you can reads about CLICK HERE

Do NOT fall into either of these traps!

You are not doing yourself, your family or your employer any favours!

All you are doing is building up major problems for the future.

I can’t do anything to help you take time off when you are ill. That is something you will need to do for yourself BUT I can help you to enjoy your vacation.

Help yourself get a promotion

I read a lot of strange things.

This week I was reading an article in the June 12th edition of the

HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW.

The headline caught my attention.

Why Not promotedAre the People Who Take Vacations the Ones Who Get Promoted?

Here is what it said:

Too many people limit their happiness and success by assuming that taking time off from work will send a negative message to their manager and slow their career advancement. But new research, says that the exact opposite is true. Taking a vacation can actually increase the likelihood of getting a raise or a promotion.

For the past two years, I’ve been partnering with the U.S. Travel Association to promote the business case for taking time off from work. Their new initiative, Project: Time Off, is one of the most robust examinations of how vacations affect companies and employees alike. Their analysis has found that Americans are taking less vacation time than at any point in the last four decades. Why? According to Gary Oster, Managing Director of Project: Time Off, “Many people don’t take time off because they think that it will negatively impact their manager’s perception of them. But, that isn’t the case at all.”

If you or someone you know needs to be convinced to use your vacation time, here’s a list of reasons why it just makes good business sense:

1. Taking a vacation increases your chances of getting a raise or promotion.

According to Project: Time Off, people who take all of their vacation time have a 6.5% higher chance of getting a promotion or a raise than people who leave 11 or more days of paid time off on the table. That percentage may sound small (and it is a correlation versus a causation), but it is the polar opposite of the idea that staying at work might mean getting ahead. It simply doesn’t.

2. A positive, engaged brain improves important business metrics.

Why I am not promoted

In The Happiness Advantage, I describe research that shows that when the brain can think positively, productivity improves by 31%, sales increase by 37%, and creativity and revenues can triple. In fact, the conclusion of my HBR magazine article, “Positive Intelligence,” which was based on a decade of research, was that “the greatest competitive advantage in the modern economy is a positive and engaged brain.” To be truly engaged at work, your brain needs periodic breaks to gain fresh perspective and energy.

But not all vacations are created equally. Consider research that shows that the average vacation yields no improvement in people’s levels of energy or happiness upon returning to work. In these cases, it wasn’t the time away that caused the negative or neutral impact, it was the travel stress. In a study of over 400 travelers from around the world, Michelle Gielan from the Institute for Applied Positive Research and I found a strong negative correlation between travel stress and happiness. However, we also found that 94% of vacations result in higher levels of happiness and energy if you 1) plan a month in advance and prepare your coworkers for your time away, 2) go outside your city (the further the better), 3) met with a local host or other knowledgeable guide at the location, and 4) have the travel details set before going. Smart vacations lead to greater happiness and energy at work, and therefore, greater productivity, intelligence and resilience.

3. Your manager will perceive you as more productive.

According to research done by the U.S. Travel Association, managers associate personal happiness with productivity. In fact, when asked what vacation time benefit would motivate managers to talk to their employees about using more vacation days, the top benefit was increased personal happiness (31%), followed by productivity (21%). Why does happiness win out? Because most managers understand that happy employees are more productive and collaborative.

4. Not taking time off means giving yourself a pay cut.

There’s no research necessary for this one; it’s just simple economics. If you’re a salaried employee, and if paid vacation is part of your compensation package, you’re essentially taking a voluntary pay cut when you work instead of taking that vacation time. Why would anyone do that? Four out of 10 employees say that they can’t take their vacation because they have too much work to do. But, think about it this way: Whether or not you take a vacation, you’re still going to have a lot of work to do. Life is finite, and work is infinite.

But what if you work in a culture that’s just not supportive of taking vacations? In that case, it’s time to come together with your coworkers and create a new social script that says: “Of course we take all our paid days off, because we want greater happiness and success at work.” This gives everyone license to benefit from time off. Once the social script allows it, your decision to become happier becomes much easier.

Live Longer and Happier

Live Longer

A 2011 study by the State University of New York at Oswego that surveyed 12,000 men between ages 35 and 57, found that men who go on vacation every year reduce their overall risk of death by 20%. While men who didn’t take any vacations in five years had the highest death rate and incidence of heart disease than any other men surveyed.

Experts from the University of Pittsburgh and Radboud University both said that people had more energy and felt more satisfied with life on vacation.

A Wisconsin Medical Journal published findings that women who take two or more vacations a year are less likely to be depressed, tired, or unhappy with their marriage. They found that women who took frequent vacations were less likely to become depressed, tense, or tired. Women who rarely took vacations were likelier to have stress at home and sleep less.

Research published by Standard Life says that taking a vacation can:

Relieve stressStress. What Stress?
The very first benefit of leaving everything behind and relieving your brain of all your worries is reduced stress.

Several studies have shown a direct link between stress and health conditions such as headaches, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and other types of infections acquired as a result of a weaker immune system. It has also been scientifically established that taking vacations reduces the incidence of burnout.

Relief from stress often gives us a new perspective on life, allows us to regain energy and often to find simple and sometimes obvious solutions to problems that had previously seemed impossible to solve.

Active MindImprove your mental skills
Some studies have found a positive relationship between vacations and intellectual function. A well-rested mind that is free of worry is often more effective.

Improve your physical health
Besides getting you away from daily stressors, a vacation often gives you the opportunity to catch up on sleep and exercise, two simple remedies for many aches and pains.

Strengthen family tiesFamily at beach
Too often, in our fast-paced daily routine, family relationships suffer. A vacation is a great opportunity to discover each other in a different setting and to build lasting memories.

Help you to enjoy life
Taking time off can be a great opportunity to meet new people, laugh and do the things that you most enjoy!

Hardly seems possible but it is and we are rapidly moving through 2015.

It is time to pause and think about our plans for the rest of the year otherwise we will find ourselves missing wonderful opportunities.

One of the important things that we need to think about is when we are going to have a vacation.

As I have mentioned in previous posts there is a whole lot of sound research that shows the advantages of having a break and the dangers of not having a break. It impacts on family life, marriages, productivity at work, mental health and physical health to name just a few.Dog on Vacation
