That is a strange remark from someone who has a doctorate in Psychology, who taught Counselling and has spent years working with people but I am still constantly surprised by people.
Let me give you an example.
Christian House Sitters offers people all over the world an opportunity to enjoy a rent free vacation. This has blessed hundreds of people. Yet yesterday I got an email from someone complaining that they are expected to cover their own travelling expenses to get to the place where they will be staying rent-free.
The lady said that she wanted to have a 2 week vacation with her husband and 3 children, they found an ideal house through our site with a swimming pool, 4 bedrooms, beautiful garden and a lovely location and on this occasion not even any pets to look after. Ideal for them but she wanted to know why she should cover the cost of the journey from where she lives to the vacation property.
Out of interest I looked it up and she would be driving about 100 miles.
Who does she think should pay this? The people who are allowing her the privilege of staying free of charge in their home?
It works both ways. Our home owners are normally delighted that someone is going to stay in their home, protect the property from intruders, and often look after their animals free of charge. But recently a potential owner decided not to register because we refused to allow him to demand that a sitter spend their time doing some major repairs to his roof. Why should they?
Our philosophy is really simple. We believe everyone benefits from our system. Sitters enjoy a rent-free vacation and owners enjoy the peace of mind of knowing their home and pets (if they have any) are looked after. Both sides also have the joy of being able to help another Christian.
We therefore do not allow either side to charge a fee nor do we allow owners to demand that the sitters spend their vacation working.
Ahh I hear someone object but surely Christian House Sitters is making lots of money through this.
Marilyn and I personally cover all the costs of running this ministry and ever penny of income goes via our registered charity (T.L.C. Children’s Trust charity number 1156786) to support a Christian Children’s Home in Kenya where really needy children are helped with accommodation, schooling, clothing, food and medical care.
