Let’s Get Serious

June 22, 2007

This is a little ‘off topic’ as they say. It is not really about setting up Christian House Sitters but both on this blog and on the Christian House Sitters web site there is a mention of the books that I have written.

I have had a number of emails asking about the Christian book called Let’s Get Serious. Folk want to know what it is about and where or how it can be used.

To save me writing the same answer over and over here are a couple of quotes.

The first is from the Introduction and explains the book.

The second is the openig page of the book.

EXTRACT FROM INTRODUCTION:

As you study this book you will learn, in very, practical down-to-earth, terms what it means to follow Jesus Christ allowing Him to become Lord of every area of your life. As you apply these teachings you are going to find God doing some wonderful things in your life. To help you get started I would like to suggest a few ways in which you can get the most benefit from this book.

1. It can be used for private study. In this case do not try to read the whole book at one sitting. Read at most one chapter per day and think carefully about how you can begin applying the principles that you have learnt before moving on to the next section.

2. This book can also be studied by a couple or indeed by a family. In this case apply the same rule outlined above but do not use the self-evaluation appendix printed at the end of the book. Instead make a copy for each person and fill it in individually and privately.

3. This book is ideal for use in a bible study/ house group situation. People will each need their own copy. Study the chapter at home before coming to the meeting then at the meeting you can discuss the teachings.

4. Finally this book is valuable as preparation for one of my seminars or as a reminder of what you learnt during the seminar. (For details about arranging a seminar please contact me. )

EXTRACT FROM CHAPTER ONE:

The preacher was an impressive looking man with a deep booming voice. Everyone had told me what a great speaker he was, and I was certainly not disappointed. When he spoke he conveyed a feeling of power and authority.

Near the end of his sermon he turned to the congregation and said; ‘One day a Chicken and a Pig were strolling down the road together when they noticed a small boy sitting at the roadside. He was dressed in rags and was sobbing. The Chicken and the Pig felt sorry for him so they went over and asked him why he was so sad. The young lad tearfully explained, “I’m hungry, you see my Dad is out of work and so there is no money at home and with no money there is no food. I am crying because I am hungry.”

The Chicken and the Pig drew aside and the Chicken said; “We must DO something. But what can we do? They thought for a while then the chicken turned to the pig and said, “I know let us pool our resources and give the kid a meal of bacon and eggs.

“Just a moment”, replied the Pig,” That’s all very well for you. All you would be doing is making a token contribution but for me it would mean total commitment.

The preacher thundered ‘God is not interested in our token contributions, He demands total commitment!’

I left that meeting feeling guilty. I knew that I’d not given God total commitment. How, I wondered does one even begin.

The idea of living a life of total surrender to God seemed somehow rather frightening and certainly far beyond my capacity. I wanted somebody to put some handles on the concept of commitment, something practical that I could grasp hold of and apply in my life……..

God bless you,

Ray

The triangle of Isaiah

June 19, 2007

I was feeling down. (not anymore – see below) It was nothing specific just a combination of things. The Christian House Sitters Site gets so many people visiting it but it seems to take forever to get members to actually sign up. They write with questions, I reply then hear nothing for days, then they send more questions, I reply again, eventually they sign up but then it takes another long wait before they submit their details. It was getting to me. I felt down.

As I was praying I was reminded of Isaiah chapter 12 verse 4 “And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.”

I call it the triangle of Isaiah. Praise -> Prayer ->Proclaim.

It begins with Praise. “Praise the LORD” Even when we don’t feel like praising God. He is worthy of our praise.

Verse 2 reminds us that “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.”

As I praise God it encourages me. I feel better. I feel more positive, My faith grows. This gives me confidence to move on to the second step. Prayer. “Praise the LORD, call upon his name I can pray because I have been praising.

As I pray I see God answering my prayers. This further builds my faith and gives me something to talk about. Something to proclaim. “Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people I can declare his doings. I can tell others how God has answered prayer.

As I do that I see God working in others lives. This in turn gives me more grounds for praise.

Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.”

Praise leads to Prayer.
Prayer leads to Proclamation
Proclamation leads to Praise

Over to Him.

June 15, 2007

I spend many hours every day sitting in front of my computer working on the Christian House Sitters web site. I have felt that this is a ministry the Lord gave to me and that as a result I have a responsibility to do a really good job.

When I need to be away from the computer I find myself feeling guilty. What if one of our members needs to ask a question? What if a new member wants to join?

Today I was asked to visit our Pastor in order to sort out some computer difficulties. I am not an expert but I am reasonably good at computers. It turned into a big job. I was there for about 7 hours working to get things up and running.

When I finished I hurried home only to find that no crisis had occurred during my absence. In fact all that I had waiting for me were messages of how God has blessed. In one particular instance a real need had been met by the Lord.

Hopefully this has reminded me that this is not my project. This is not my ministry. This project belongs to God. It is His ministry.

He knows what needs to be done and whilst that is no excuse for me to be lazy it also moved the responsibility to His shoulders.

I will continue working diligently but the success or otherwise of each house sit is His responsibility.

He is far better at arranging things than me.

Estonia?

June 11, 2007

Running Christian House Sitters has been an interesting experience. I am astounded by some of the requests that we receive. I have also been greatly blessed by the comments of others.

Last night one of our house sitters sent me an email saying that they really need a house sit in September in Estonia. She asked me to make this known.

I am happy to do so and I put a mention on our Needed Now page but to be honest I have my doubts that many Christians in Estonia log on to our web site.

I want to help this person so if you have any Christian contacts in  Estonia that I can contact please will you either let me have their email address or could you ask them to look at our site.

Thanks.

Do the job God gives you.

June 10, 2007

As I mentioned in my last post Marilyn and I recently changed churches. A couple of days ago I attended my first house group meeting for the new church. Being the ‘new boy’ I was asked a lot of questions about myself, what I have done before, etc.

I mentioned that we recently launched Christian House Sitters and that God was richly blessing this venture.

I was then asked what I had done before and I mentioned that I am a Psychologist by training and that one of the things we did was to run a Stress Management business. This seemed to spark interest in the group and I was asked lots of questions about my work in the field of stress. I mentioned that I had been Chair of the International Stress Management Association (UK) and that I had written a book on Stress called Stress Overcoming this Potential Killer.

As I was chatting I noticed a rather odd expression on the face of the group leader.

When I finished he said that the group had decided to spend 3 weeks looking at the subject of Stress in the life of a Christian. They were starting that evening and he was due to lead the teaching.

I think he felt a little awkward leading in my presence but he was actually very good indeed and I found his teaching a blessing. We can all learn from each other. God had guided him to teach on this subject. God did not make a mistake.

Before you ask

June 8, 2007

Before you ask I will answer says the Lord.

Well Marilyn and I recently changed churches. No problem with our previous church. We remain on very good terms but we moved to a new town and therefore needed to find somewharer local to worship.

We are very happy in the new church. However because we are new we felt it would be wrong to say too much about Christian House Sitters. Each week we look at the church notices and the thought crossed our mind that our house sitting service should be listed.

We have not hesitated to inform our previous church. But we are so new here. It felt awkward.

We chatted to each other and decided to wait another month then chat to the Pastor and explain all about Christian House Sitters and ask for some publicity.

This evening I logged on to the site and noticed that we have another new member. I looked again and yes indeed the new member is our own Pastor.

What an encouragement. We did not have to ask him to approve of our ministry. He found it himself, investigated and joined.

Thank you Lord.

GPS

June 5, 2007

In my car I have a GPS device. To be perfectly honest I only have a very general idea how it works. I know it picks up signals from a number of satellites and then coordinates the results to calculate where I am. All very clever stuff.

I may not understand it fully but I trust it. When I am going somewhere new I type in the address and a voice tells me where to turn and guides me to my destination.

There are times when something unexpected happens on my journey. There may be road works or an accident blocking the route. Not a problem to my GPS it simply re calculates a new route.

At times it gets cross with me (yes I know it is just a machine). This is when I miss a turning. It tells me to turn back or if I continue it calculates a new route.

If only I could hear the guiding voice of God as easily and clearly.

He knows exactly where I am. He knows the best route for my life. I want to be sensitive to His guidance. I want to trust His directions even when from my perspective they do not make sense.

God never sleeps

June 2, 2007

God never sleeps. An amazing thought. Whatever the time He is there. He is awake and watching over His children.

What brought this to my mind? Well I am just about to get ready for bed. After all it is almost 11pm Saturday night and tomorrow morning I want to be wide awake for church. As I prepare to go to bed I realised that our Christian House Sitters membership are in a very wide variety of time zones. We have house sitters in Australia and New Zealand who are no doubt getting up and getting themselves ready for church even as I prepare to go to bed. To them it is already tomorrow. We also have house owners and house sitters in America. To them it is still early Saturday evening. Way to early to be thinking of bed.

This realisation was reinforced by the fact that I know most mornings when I turn on my computer I will have messages from members who live down under. These were sent while I was sleeping.  Messages I send to our members in the USA and Canada only get opened much later in the day.

All different yet every one is precious to God.

I am so glad He never slumbers nor sleeps.

I am confused.

June 1, 2007

I am confused. Those who know me well say that getting me confused is not too much of a challenge. So no doubt this confusion is something you, my reader, can easily solve. If so please reply and help me out of my confusion.

As you know I run the web site Christian House Sitters. Over the past week I have had a number of very similar emails. They have come from all over the world. Scotland, Australia, America and South Africa. All have asked basically the same question. They have come from people saying that they have a holiday planned, they go on to mention the dates. Then they say something along the lines that they would love to have some Christian to look after their home and pets while they are away. They ask what we charge.

My first point of confusion is that the web site clearly says that our service is, at the moment, FREE to home owners.

Anyway I always reply explaining that this will not cost them anything and that there is therefore no risk involved.

I offer to help them with listing their details if they need any help.

Then nothing happens. They do not reply to my message. They do not list their house. They do not do anything.

As I said I am confused. If they were interested enough to want to use this service. Interested enough to email asking for the cost. Why do they vanish when told it is free?

Any ideas?
